Service Learning is an integral part of a student's educational experience at Governors State University.
Governors State University serves a comparatively economically challenged area - the Chicago southland region. Thus, the mission of the university, in part, is to promote the social and economic development of its service region.
The university does this through an array of academic programs, community outreach efforts and by delivering higher education to underserved and under-represented populations. We believe that it is important to educate citizens to help others.

Civic Engagement and Intercultural Education has worked with faculty teaching the ENGL
1010, Writing Studies II to integrate service learning within their
curriculum. Through this initiative, GSU
students will participate in the High Impact Practices (HIP) in their first year. CEIE is still available to help faculty create a focused project
aimed at adding the HIP of Service
Learning to a first-year course required of all first-year students.
CEIE is available to assist other disciplines in creating a meaningful service project to be included within the curriculum. Please visit Faculty Resources on our website for helpful information on service learning and creating your syllabi.
